Parkland Shooter Avoids the Death Penalty Jury recommends Life Without Parole

The jury on Thursday showed mercy to the Parkland school shooter, rejecting a death sentence and recommending he spend life in prison.

Cruz will be formally sentenced Nov. 1. Broward Judge Elizabeth Scherer does not have the discretion to impose the death penalty, now that at least one juror found that the life of school shooter Nikolas Cruz should be spared. The jury deliberated for just seven hours. --SunSentinel

As the judge read through each count related to each victim, and the individual verdicts from the jurors, family members became emotional in the courtroom.

Cruz, 24, pleaded guilty to the murders of 14 students and three staff members at Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14, 2018.

It is the deadliest U.S. mass shooting to go before a jury. The trial has only been to determine his sentence.
